Goodyear Tires' Goodyear Blimp
Goodyear Tires are almost always synonymous
with Goodyear Blimp. The classic airship is an indelible part
of American popular culture mainly due to its omnipotent
presence over football games in the United States over the
course of several decades. Goodyear tires truly hit one out of
the park with that marketing idea. But, the Goodyear Blimp did
not originally start as a promotional vehicle for Goodyear
tires.
Goodyear Tires created the first blimp, The
Pilgrim, in the 1920’s as an effort to develop a legitimate and
feasible method of transcontinental passenger
transportation.
Unfortunately, this method of public and
private transportation did not last long because of the rise of
large aircrafts. However, Goodyear Tires did continue to
manufacture blimps. The total tally for blimps that Goodyear
produced was up in the neighborhood of 300!
Goodyear's blimp left the scene as a public
and private mode of transportation but entered the U.S.
military scene as a method of international spying. Originally
utilized for this clandestine purpose during the Second World
War, Goodyear tires continued to supply their blimps to the US
government until the early 1960’s before the program was
discontinued.
The Goodyear blimp began to make numerous
appearances over football stadiums when the company became
sponsors of NFL football. This achieved far greater public
response than had Goodyear tires simply tried commercial
advertising alone as the blimp quickly attained a mythic status
with audiences. This gave Goodyear Tires a huge advantage over
competing tire companies.
Blimps are no longer produced today. Despite
the lack of its presence in the world today, the Goodyear blimp
remains an indelible part of pop culture and the greatest
promotional tool in Goodyear Tires history.
